Known as one of Europe’s most interesting old towns, Gamle Stavanger’s cobblestone streets are adorned with a collection of wooden buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Norway’s fourth largest city, it flourished early on, thanks to its strategic location and bountiful fjords. More recently, it has experienced an economic boom from offshore drilling, transforming from a tranquil town into a vibrant city, culminating in the European Capital of Culture honor in 2008.
