A Telemark, Norway native, Gulleik Svalastog dreamed of the day when he would be captain of his own ship. After years of nautical experience, he saved his best sailing experience for last: commanding Viking Star.

On January 8, 2023, Viking named its newest identical ocean ship, the Viking Neptune, during a special ceremony in Los Angeles. As part of the event, the ship’s ceremonial godmother, retired NASA astronaut and aquanaut Nicole Stott, offered a blessing of good fortune and safe sailing for the ship—a naval tradition that dates back thousands of years.
